Explore The Difference Between Sleep Coaching and Sleep Training
Although the terms are technically interchangeable, sleep training has often been met with negative connotations. For years, sleep training was thought to mean "Cry-It-Out" (CIO), a method Dr. Richard Ferber made popular. This method spawned many books and was coined "The Ferber Method." CIO meant you placed your baby in their crib or bassinet and let the baby cry for as long as it took them to fall asleep or give up that anyone was coming to tend to them.
"Ferberizing" became popular with generations of parents. They placed their babies in their crib while awake and left. Then, parents checked on their baby in longer and longer timed increments. All without picking up the baby.
The strict strategies didn't include much room for considering a baby or parent's needs or ability to adhere to the rigidity. Many parents lacked the consistency to make the program work for them. Many threw away the Ferber Method and searched for alternatives as the tide shifted to more attachment parenting. At Little Dipper Sleep, we understand the importance of security and methods that can be altered to work for everyone.
The Sleep Coaching Standard
This is why we believe that by "coaching" a parent to create a system that works for them, we are continuing to build the bonds between parents, caregivers, and children. We prefer "Sleep Coaching" or "Sleep Teaching/Learning." Sleep coaching is about creating a plan that considers a family's needs while focusing on quality sleep for everyone.
In many families, "sleep training" is unnecessary because Little Dipper Sleep helps you resolve the root cause of the problem, yielding peaceful sleep with no behavioral modification or tears. However, in some cases, parents decide that changes need to be made to how or where a child falls asleep. As experienced Sleep Coaches, we've seen a variety of "sleep training" methods work like a charm - some with minimal crying, some with a lot, temperament, and method depending. And although we prefer the terms sleep teaching/learning or sleep coaching, the most essential factor in getting your baby (or yourself to sleep) is consistency, so your ability and willingness to commit to a plan is the #1 consideration. Our role is to support you in the path that feels right to you — your own "true north" as a parent.
Teaching (or coaching) any child or adult a new skill, whether learning their ABCs, driving a car, or putting themselves to sleep, should be done with patience and a mindset for success. That is why it is crucial to help families discover stellar sleep together.

If you purchase a coaching package, you'll receive an intake form with loads of questions so that we understand your family's unique sleep history, lifestyle, parenting style, temperaments, and goals. From there, we collaborate to develop your 100% personalized sleep plan. As your coach, we help you stay the course through thick and thin, cheerleading, offering empathy, insight, and solutions, shoulders to cry on, and high fives. The amount of follow-up coaching you receive is entirely up to you.
Remember, our services are not meant ONLY for those school-aged or younger. We have successfully helped adults and even grandparents find ways to improve their sleep. Our program is not a cookie-cutter plan designed for one age range. Our highly-trained and certified sleep coaches have a wealth of evidence-based strategies designed to help anyone under the roof.
